    The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) held its thirty-ninth session from 15 to 20 October 2012 at FAO Headquarters in Rome. The following are selected highlights from the CFS deliberation in which the private sector mechanism was most involved: Policy discussions based on the HLPE’s studies which include constraints on smallholder investment and biofuels, Responsible agricultural investment principles (RAI), development of an Agenda for Action on food security and nutrition in countries in protracted crises, and Food Security and Nutrition (FSN) Terminology Options Paper.

    The Committee on Food Security has called on UN member states, international organisations and other stakeholders to foster co-operatives and farmer organisations. This is part of its recommended “twin-track” strategy, ratified in Rome today, to ensure essential assistance is given in the short term to those in need while at the same time protecting and building productive assets for a sustainable future.

  • Human Rights and Business – Event

    The first United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights was held in Geneva on 3-5 December 2012. The two days of the Forum included more than 20 official sessions, with a number of side sessions held from 3-5 December. Around 1,000 participants from more than 80 countries registered to attend the Forum, making it the largest global gathering on business and human rights to date. The Forum focused on discussing trends and challenges in relation to implementation of the Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights for implementation of the United Nations "Protect, Respect and Remedy" framework.

    The purpose of this meeting was to present transformative partnerships as promoted and facilitated through Grow Africa model by complementing national agriculture-sector strategies in order to increase private sector investment into African agriculture. The event will highlight cross-sector collaboration, facilitating best-practice exchange and stakeholder engagement, building increased trust and shared commitment and engaging all stakeholders including smallholder farmers.

  • Responsible Agricultural Investments – PSM High Level Dinner 2012

    The High Level Dinner on Priorities for Accelerating the Implementation of Responsible Agricultural Investment saw a gathering of 86 delegates including Ambassadors and permanent representatives, CEO’s, association representatives, donor organizations, leaders from the Rome-based agencies and World Bank. The objective of this event was to understand the key policy recommendations that are needed to build better private sector engagement in the food value chain in developing countries. The delegates were encouraged to consider what governments, international companies, local companies and donors need to do.

  • Nutrition – Event

    This event was hosted by Mars Inc. and it was focused on two intervention strategies where the private sector could play prominent roles to help eliminate food insecurity: 1) Develop and deliver fortified nutritious food products to vulnerable populations, and 2) Seize opportunities to include nutrition in the agriculture production supply chain. The synergy between the two represent affordable and cost-effective strategies that the private sector can deploy now and expect several social, economic and health benefits, especially among women and young children.
