IFPRI’s 2016 Global Food Policy Report Now Available
IFPRI’s flagship publication, the 2016 Global Food Policy Report, is now available.
The report examines the major food policy issues, developments, and international commitments of 2015, presents the latest research and data on key food policy indicators, and proposes policy options for 2016 and beyond.
This year’s report takes an in-depth look at the latest research on opportunities and challenges the world will face in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It includes chapters on climate change and smallholder farmers, sustainable diets, food loss and waste, and water management, as well as regional food security and nutrition profiles.
Today’s food system has major weaknesses:
- 800 million people are left hungry and one-third of the human population is malnourished.
- Over half of some crops never make it to the table due to loss and waste.
- Land area the size of Nicaragua is lost due to drought and desertification every year.
- The Western diet is unsustainable—feeding just one Westerner for one year emits as much greenhouse gas as seven round trip drives from New York to Los Angeles.
The 2016 Global Food Policy Report makes the case for a new global food system that is efficient, inclusive, climate-smart, sustainable, nutrition- and health-driven, and business-friendly.
