November 19-21 2014 | Rome, Italy

The IAFN was thrilled to be able to help coordinate the participation of the Private Sector Mechanism and its partners at the UN’s Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) from November 19-21, 2014, in Rome. Thanks to the efforts, expertise, and outreach of the network’s supporters, we were able to secure a 90 person delegation from over 24 countries and all parts of the agri-food value chain.

The IAFN is highly appreciative of the collaboration with our private sector partners at the SUN Business Network and the global livestock sector, who allowed an even bigger reach and knowledge-base as we aim to unite in the global fight against all forms of hunger and malnutrition. Together, we ensured an important and meaningful contribution at the event.

Private sector pre-conference with FAO & WHO, November 18, Westin Hotel
On November 18, 2015, the private sector had a special ‘pre-conference’ with the highest ranks of the UN organising bodies of ICN2: the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) & the World Health Organisation (WHO). As co-convener of the conference, FAO Director General Jose Graziano da Silva attended our event alongside his Deputy Director-General of Operations, Dan Gustafson. From WHO’s side the participation was led by Oleg Chestnov, Assistant Director-General. The aim of the event was to enable actors from across the agri-food value chain to explain their role in providing nutrition, as well as highlight how they should be seen as a source of solutions and an important implementation partner.

Private Sector Speakers:

  1. Marc Van Ameringen, Executive Director, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, GAIN
  2. Rocco Renaldi, Secretary General, International Food and Beverage Alliance, IFBA
  3. Veronique Droulez, Senior Nutrition Manager, Meat and Livestock Australia

Prior to the high-level meeting, the private sector held a briefing for all new delegates to prepare newcomers to ICN2.

Bilateral Meetings: Relationship Building

The Private Sector Mechanism organised bilateral meetings with key country groups, covering a span of more than 40 countries. The meetings were chaired by Helen Medina (USCIB); Veronique Droulez (Meat and Livestock Australia); Carel du Marchie Sarvaas (International Federation of Animal Health); Jonathan Tench (SUN Business Network); Tjeerd de Groot (NVZ, the Dutch Dairy Association).

During the meetings, there was solid recognition that multi-stakeholder approaches are widely recognised to be necessary to increase the scope of financial and human resources in order to tackle nutritional challenges; and concrete examples of PPPs strongly called for by all countries.

Alongside high-level attendees such as Ban Ki-Moon (via video), Pope Francis, Melinda Gates and Queen Letizia of Spain, global businesses had the opportunity to take the floor in the plenary chamber a total of six times.
