Poor diet is the number one risk factor for early death, contributing to 20% of global deaths with the burden falling disproportionately on children under five and women of reproductive age.
On July 13, the International Agri-Food Network partnered with a number of leading organizations to host “Agriculture and Food Day” to celebrate, discuss, negotiate, analyze, and brainstorm around the role of Agriculture and Food in relation to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The day included a thematically-focused plenary session with high-level speakers including high-ranking UN diplomats, a series of roundtable discussions on inter-linkages in SDGs, and dynamic luncheon featuring youth in agriculture with the goal to raise awareness of the critical need for investment in Goal 2.
To better coordinate business participation in the 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly (UN GA Week), the UN Global Compact is creating a General Assembly Business Guide which lists events that may be of interest to companies during and around UN GA Week.

Building on the official summary of the forum by the President of ECOSOC, a new publication has been released to provide detailed coverage of the substantive discussions at the 2017 Second Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) forum on financing for development follow-up (FfD forum), held from 22 to 25 May 2017 in New York. It also includes a series of annexes containing summaries of the side events held during the forum and other relevant documents.
Final days to participate in e-Consultation on Rural women: striving for gender transformative impacts.
The FAO’s FSN Forum is running an e-consultation on Rural Women that is meant to feed into the agenda for the Commission on the Status of Women that will take place in March 2018 at the United Nations in New York. CSW is an important venue to address the challenges and opportunities faced by rural women and girls. The e-consultation is inviting all stakeholders to provide answers and share case-studies on this topic.

International food standards play a key role in protecting human health, the environment, consumers’ interests and international trade
Imagine a world with no international standards for food. Consumers would feel less sure of the quality of what they consume. Producers would have to comply with different requirements for each market. Small exporters, with fewer available resources, would be at an even greater disadvantage. International trade would decline and prices would inevitably rise dealing a further blow to consumers, particularly the poorest who spend a greater percentage of their income on food.
