Africa is a youthful continent, with youth – defined by the African Union as every person between the age of 15 and 35 – currently constituting 35 percent of its population. By 2050, this number is expected to double, reaching over 830 million, meaning that 29 percent of the total world youth population will reside in Africa. FAO has launched an online discussion on this topic, which all are welcomed to join.

Mexico City, 16 October 2017: Rabobank and UN Environment announced today the creation of a new one-billion-dollar facility to finance sustainable agriculture using a combination of public and private funding. Together they also invite other interested financial institutions to sign up and work actively with global food companies to put this into practice.

I had the privilege to attend this year’s UN Committee on World Food Security thanks to a grant provided for farmers and SMEs to join the Private Sector Mechanism. My expectation of CFS 44 was that I would have the opportunity to share my experience as an entrepreneur from an emerging market on the important role played by SMEs to achieve food security and nutrition. I also was looking to learn about global case studies that can be localized back at home.
A new online discussion on Sustainable Farming Systems for Food and Nutrition Security, organized jointly with the Leveraging Agriculture for Nutrition in South Asia Research Programme (LANSA), is open for contributions until November 10, 2017.
From 18 October 2017 to 15 November 2017 During its 44th Plenary Session (9-13 October 2017), the CFS requested the HLPE to produce a report on “Agroecological approaches and other innovations for sustainable agriculture and food systems that enhance food security and nutrition”, to be presented at CFS46 Plenary session in October 2019. The goal of the CFS Global Strategic Framework for Food Security and Nutri-tion (GSF) is to provide an overarching framework and reference point for food security and nutrition strategies, policies and actions. It is targeted at decision and policy-makers and consolidates all the CFS policy work, taking into account also other existing frameworks, guidelines and processes.
